Axions and Their Distribution in Galactic Halos

چکیده

Axion physics is briefly reviewed. Constraints from laboratory searches, astrophysics and cosmology require the axion mass to be in the range 10 . ma < 3 · 10eV. Near the lower end of this range, axions are all or a major component of the cold dark matter of the universe. The late infall of axions, and of any other cold dark matter particles, onto our galaxy produces streams and caustics in its halo. The outer caustics are topological spheres whereas the inner caustics are rings. The self-similar model of galactic halo formation predicts that the caustic ring radii an obey the approximate law an ∼ 1/n. Evidence for this law has been found in a statistical study of 32 extended and well-measured external galactic rotation curves, and in the existence and distribution of sharp rises in the Milky Way rotation curve. Moreover, a triangular feature in the IRAS map of the Galactic plane is consistent with the imprint of a ring caustic upon the baryonic matter. Its position coincides with a rise in the rotation curve, the one nearest to us. These observations imply that the dark matter in our neighborhood is dominated by a single flow. Estimates of that flow’s density and velocity vector are given.

Axion BEC Dark Matter

Cold dark matter axions thermalize through gravitational self-interactions and form a BoseEinstein condensate when the photon temperature reaches approximately 500 eV. Axion Bose-Einstein condensation provides an opportunity to distinguish axions from the other dark matter candidates on the basis of observation. The rethermalization of axions that are about to fall in a galactic potential well ...

Caustic Rings and Cold Dark Matter

The hierarchical cold dark matter (CDM) model for structure formation is a well defined and testable model. Direct detection is the best technique for confirming the model yet predictions for the energy and density distribution of particles on earth remain inadequate. Axially symmetric collapse of collisionless dark matter can leave observable caustic rings in phase space and this model is freq...

Probing the Nature of Dark Matter through QSO Distribution in the Fields of Galactic Halos

The amplification caused by gravitational light bending by compact objects in a foreground galaxy can affect the apparent number density of background QSOs, as well as their distribution in the fields of galactic halos. In this work we investigate the distribution of QSOs in the fields of galactic halos caused by point mass lensing effect and singular isothermal lensing effect, and apply the mi...

Spatial distribution of galactic halos and their merger histories

We use a novel statistical tool, the mark correlation functions (MCFs), to study clustering of galaxysize halos as a function of their properties and environment in a high-resolution numerical simulation of the ΛCDM cosmology. We applied MCFs using several types of continuous and discrete marks: maximum circular velocity of halos, merger mark indicating whether halos experienced or not a major ...

High resolution search for dark-matter axions

In the current concordance cosmology, 23% of the universe’s total energy density is contributed by exotic dark matter [1]. The axion, arising from the Peccei-Quinn solution to the strong CP problem [2], satisfies the two criteria necessary for cold dark matter [3]: (1) a very cold population of axions could be present in our universe in sufficient quantities to provide the required dark matter ...
